When Nobody's Watching

When Nobody's Watching

When Nobody's Watching

Without the fear of expectations, criticism, and/or judgement, participants are led to a room and are only instructed to act or do as they feel without any intervention or direction from the photographer. The same music is also played in the background for all participants to help isolate themselves from reality and tap into their inner thoughts, feelings, and selves.

"The isolation reminded me of my depression; of my fear of emptiness. But as the music intensified I was possessed by a feeling of hope. Of invincibility. Like an untouchable ghost. And even though the moment was fleeting and artificial, the feeling was genuine." --- quote by Duane Lucas,  one of the models talking about his experience inside "The Room". This is a personal, experimental project on people's true nature and identity when society is not looking.

I’ve always believed that nakedness and isolation can bring out our most vulnerable, honest selves. Without the influence of the outside world, we’re free to think, act, and feel in the absolute earnestness of our souls. In this series, I've asked my subjects to do two things: (1) to move—or not—however they feel like to the music I was playing, and (2) erase my presence in the room. No direction, no choreography.

Just you, the room, and the music.

This project started on June 2016 and ended May 2017 with a total number of 54 volunteers.

I don't own the song used in this slideshow.
