Made by the Sea

Made by the Sea is a work in progress that I’ve started in 2018. It is a series that explores the idea of creating images with the sea by using the movements of the waves as the cyanotype chemistry reacts under sunlight.  This creates different patterns and shades that are unique to cyanotype prints.

Art is inherent in nature - from microscopic patterns to massive landscapes, it has its own distinct way of expressing its own aesthetics. However, this natural art expressed through human means is an opportunity that’s rarely initiated - much less explored. Made by Sea, in essence, allows a part of nature - in this case the sea, to express its art using a man-made medium. The result is a collaborative work between the two - the inherent beauty that’s present in nature “drawn” on a canvas that’s processed through human’s own artistic understanding and methods.

The Cyanotype process has two distinct characteristics - its signature “prussian blue” color, and that no two results are identical. This uniqueness gives each print a sense of identity and story. I’ve taken these concepts and merged them with my love for the sea. The idea of just sitting down, listening to the waves, and converting those waves to photographic art is an intimate, serene, and one-of-a-kind artistic process, and each finished work reflects the story of the waves during the place and time that it was made.

cyanotype = ferric ammonium citrate + potassium ferricyanide

disclaimer: no fishes and Nemos will be harmed on this activity. We are just adding more salt to the sea
